Situated on the Lake Washington waterfront, the home reaches low
across the site following the natural contours of the land. Individual
wings comprised of the family area, master suite, garages, and sports
pavilion, branch out from the core of the home offering a variety
of perspectives of the grounds. The interior space varies from soaring
formal grand hall to a light drenched private solarium.

The site is a rare jewel on Lake Washington that had never been
built on. There were environmental challenges and zoning issues
but the team of architects, landscape architect and civil engineer
offered creative solutions that the city of Mercer Island and owners
enthusiastically embraced. These included bridging the drive over
a seasonal stream that was enhanced by twelve ton granite boulders,
waterfalls, natural landscaping and a wetland sanctuary at the lake.
The gated drive curves through the forest for hundreds of feet down
to the house nestled on the shore. The large three level home reflects
the owner's midwest heritage of Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie Houses.
The Prairie Style has influenced the classic Northwest Contemporary
movement for decades and was a natural choice for this environmentally
sensitive site.

Making the most of a moderate size Lake Washington site, the intimate
approach to this home initially presents a very private impression,
but unfolds to offer a wide open waterfront expanse. The entry not
only serves as a place to greet guests, but serves as an art gallery
as well as a direct connection to the lakefront terrace. Large radius
window walls emphasize the panoramic lake and mountain views, and
gracefully reflect the natural shoreline.

The site is long and narrow with a steep bank down to the shore
of Fairweather Bay. The bank was chosen as the best location for
the house. With easy access to the water and optimum views, the
three level configuration provides for dramatic architecture both
inside and out. The relationship between the architecture and its
surroundings is creatively established by the curvilinear theme.
Curving forms are featured in the staircase and expansive decks.
The glass deck rails open up the wonderful views of the bay and
Hunt's Point to the interior of the house.

Overlooking Puget Sound, this majestic European styled house reflects
the owner's taste and active lifestyle. The grand scale of the exterior
is carried through the spacious interior with twelve foot ceilings,
intricate floor patterns and refined millwork detailing, all designed
by LE&A. The day rooms open onto terraces that lead to the rolling
lawns, arbors and outdoor activity areas. The three children have
individually designed private suites with secret doors to play areas,
dormered window seats and built-ins.

Although somewhat casual in outward appearance, this design
intentionally blurs the conventional interior distinctions between
formal and informal spaces, resulting in the ability to graciously
accommodate a wide variety of public as well as private gatherings.
Careful massing and balancing of exterior elements allows the inclusion
of an unusually large garage/shop that does not compete with the
residential character.
